Alimony / Spousal Support Estimator
Estimates monthly spousal support using income-based formulas and marriage duration guidelines used across many U.S. jurisdictions.
Formulas Used
AAML Model (American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers):
Monthly Alimony = (30% × Payer Gross Income) − (20% × Recipient Gross Income)
Capped so recipient's post-support income ≤ 40% of combined gross income.
Income Shares Model:
Monthly Alimony = (40% × Combined Gross Income) − Recipient Gross Income
Flat Percentage Model:
Monthly Alimony = 25% × (Payer Income − Recipient Income)
Duration Guidelines:
<3 yrs → ~6 months | 3–7 yrs → 1 yr per 3 yrs married | 7–15 yrs → 40% of marriage length |
15–20 yrs → 50% of marriage length | 20+ yrs → potentially indefinite
Alimony Type Modifier:
Temporary = 100% | Rehabilitative = 85% | Permanent = 100%
Assumptions & References
- Based on the AAML Model Guidelines widely referenced in U.S. family law practice.
- Income Shares approach used in states like Colorado, New Mexico, and others.
- Duration guidelines follow the 1/3 rule common in many jurisdictions (e.g., Massachusetts, New Jersey).
- All figures use gross monthly income before taxes and deductions.
- Does not account for child support obligations, which typically reduce alimony capacity.
- Does not account for cohabitation, remarriage, or disability — all of which affect real awards.
- Permanent alimony is increasingly rare; most modern courts prefer rehabilitative or durational support.
