Carpet Cleaning Frequency Recommender
Find out how often you should professionally deep-clean your carpets based on your household's specific conditions.
Formula
Score = ⌊Occupants ÷ 2⌋ × 1.0 + Pets × 2.5 + Children × 1.5 + Allergies × 3.0 + (TrafficLevel − 1) × 2.0 + Shoes × 2.0 + Smoking × 4.0
Interval (months) = max(6, min(18, round(18 − Score)))
The base interval of 18 months represents a minimal-risk household (1–2 adults, no pets, no children, low traffic, no shoes indoors, no smoking, no allergies). Each risk factor reduces the interval, with a floor of 6 months (twice yearly) for the highest-risk households.
Assumptions & References
- The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) recommends professional carpet cleaning every 12–18 months for average households.
- The EPA and ACAAI (American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology) recommend more frequent cleaning for allergy and asthma sufferers, as carpets trap allergens, dust mites, and pet dander.
- Pets are weighted heavily (2.5 pts each) because pet hair, dander, and accidents are among the leading causes of carpet soiling and odour.
- Smoking indoors carries the highest single-factor weight (4.0 pts) due to tar and nicotine residue embedding deeply in carpet fibres.
- Shoes-off households can extend cleaning intervals significantly by preventing outdoor soil, bacteria, and pesticides from being tracked in.
- Vacuuming frequency recommendations follow the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) guidelines: high-traffic or pet households should vacuum daily; medium-traffic households 2–3×/week; low-traffic households 1–2×/week.
