Commercial Roof Drainage Calculator
Calculate the required roof drainage capacity, number of drains, and pipe sizing for commercial roofing systems using the Rational Method.
Use local IDF curves for your region (typically 2–10 in/hr for 10-yr storm)
Typical 4″ drain ≈ 100 GPM; 6″ drain ≈ 230 GPM (per manufacturer specs)
Formulas Used
Rational Method (ASCE / IPC):
Q = C × i × A
- Q = Peak runoff rate (ft³/s)
- C = Runoff coefficient (dimensionless, 0–1)
- i = Rainfall intensity (in/hr) from local IDF curve
- A = Drainage area (acres); 1 acre = 43,560 ft²
Unit Conversion: 1 ft³/s = 448.831 GPM
Design Flow: Qdesign = Q × Safety Factor
Number of Drains: N = ⌈ Qdesign / Capacity per Drain ⌉
Weir Flow (head estimate): Q = Cw × L × H1.5 → H = (Q / (Cw × L))2/3
Where Cw = 3.0 (weir coefficient), L = π × drain diameter (ft)
Leader Pipe Sizing: Based on IPC Table 1106.2 at 1/8 in/ft slope
Assumptions & References
- Rational Method assumes a uniform rainfall intensity over the entire roof area for the duration of the storm.
- Runoff coefficients per ASCE 7 and IPC Chapter 11 for impervious roof surfaces.
- Rainfall intensity (i) should be obtained from NOAA Atlas 14 or local IDF curves for the appropriate return period (typically 10-year storm for primary drainage).
- IBC Section 1503.4 requires a secondary (overflow) drainage system capable of handling the full design flow independently of the primary system.
- Leader/downspout pipe capacities based on IPC Table 1106.2 (vertical conductors at 1/8 in/ft slope).
- Water head estimate uses a circular weir approximation with Cw = 3.0 and assumes a 4-inch drain body diameter.
- A safety factor of 1.25 is commonly applied per good engineering practice to account for debris, partial blockage, and intensity uncertainty.
- Green roof runoff coefficients per FLL Guidelines and ASTM E2399.
- This calculator does not account for roof slope, internal gutter sizing, or sump design — consult a licensed engineer for final design.
