Contractor Bond and Insurance Cost Estimator

Estimate your annual contractor bond and insurance costs based on your business revenue, trade type, and required coverage limits.

Formulas Used

General Liability Premium:
GL Premium = (Annual Revenue ÷ 1,000) × Trade Rate × Coverage Limit Multiplier
Trade rates range from $7.50 (landscaping) to $14.50 (roofing) per $1,000 revenue.
Limit multipliers: $500K = 0.75×, $1M = 1.00×, $2M = 1.35×, $5M = 1.85×. Minimum premium: $500.

Surety Bond Premium:
Bond Premium = Bond Amount × Bond Rate
Bond rates by credit: Excellent = 1.0%, Good = 2.0%, Fair = 3.5%, Poor = 8.0%. Minimum: $100.

Workers' Compensation Premium:
WC Premium = (Annual Payroll ÷ 100) × WC Class Rate
WC rates per $100 payroll: General $8.50, Electrical $6.00, Plumbing $7.00, HVAC $7.50, Roofing $25.00, Painting $9.00, Landscaping $8.00, Concrete $9.50. Minimum: $300.

Tools & Equipment Rider:
Tools Rider = MIN(Annual Revenue × 0.5%, $2,000)

Total Annual Cost:
Total = GL Premium + Bond Premium + WC Premium + Tools Rider

Assumptions & References

  • General Liability rates are based on industry benchmark ranges from the Insurance Information Institute (III) and NCCI commercial lines data.
  • Surety bond rates reflect standard market rates from the Surety & Fidelity Association of America (SFAA); credit score is the primary underwriting factor.
  • Workers' Compensation class rates are based on NCCI loss cost benchmarks; actual rates are state-filed and vary significantly by jurisdiction.
  • Tools & Equipment rider is an estimate; actual coverage depends on equipment value and insurer.
  • No claims history, experience modification factor (EMR), or prior losses are factored into this estimate. A poor claims history can increase premiums 25–100%+.
  • Some states (e.g., WA, OH, ND, WY) require WC through a state fund rather than private insurers.
  • Sole proprietors may be exempt from WC requirements in many states but should verify with their state's labor department.
  • Bond amounts required vary by state and license type; check your state contractor licensing board for minimums.
  • This tool does not include Professional Liability (E&O), Commercial Auto, Umbrella, or Builder's Risk policies, which may also be required.
  • All estimates are for budgeting purposes only. Consult a licensed insurance broker for actual quotes and binding coverage.
