Employee Overtime Pay Calculator

Calculate your overtime pay based on hours worked, your regular hourly rate, and applicable overtime rules (daily or weekly thresholds).

Formulas Used

Regular Pay:
Regular Pay = min(Hours Worked, OT Threshold) × Hourly Rate

Overtime Pay:
Overtime Hours = max(0, Hours Worked − OT Threshold)
Overtime Rate = Hourly Rate × Multiplier
Overtime Pay = Overtime Hours × Overtime Rate

Total Weekly Pay:
Total Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

Effective Hourly Rate:
Effective Rate = Total Pay ÷ Total Hours Worked

Assumptions & References

  • The default overtime threshold is 40 hours per week, as mandated by the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • The standard overtime multiplier under the FLSA is 1.5× (time and a half) for all hours exceeding the threshold.
  • Some states (e.g., California) apply daily overtime rules (e.g., over 8 hours/day); this calculator uses weekly thresholds only.
  • Double time (2×) may apply for hours exceeding 12 in a single day or working a 7th consecutive day, depending on jurisdiction.
  • This calculator does not account for taxes, deductions, bonuses, or shift differentials.
  • Salaried exempt employees are generally not entitled to overtime under the FLSA.
