EV Home Charging Cost Calculator (Virginia Electricity Rates)

Estimate your monthly and annual cost to charge your electric vehicle at home using current Virginia residential electricity rates.

Full usable battery capacity of your EV (e.g. Tesla Model 3 Long Range ≈ 75 kWh)
Average efficiency of your EV (typical range: 2.5–4.5 mi/kWh)
Average monthly driving distance (U.S. average ≈ 1,183 miles/month)
Level 2 chargers are typically 85–95% efficient; Level 1 ≈ 80–85%

Formulas Used

Wall kWh per mile = 1 ÷ (EV Efficiency × Charger Efficiency)

Monthly kWh (from wall) = Miles per Month × Wall kWh per Mile

Monthly Cost ($) = Monthly kWh (wall) × Electricity Rate ($/kWh)

Annual Cost ($) = Monthly Cost × 12

Cost per Mile ($) = Monthly Cost ÷ Miles per Month

Full Charge Cost ($) = (Battery Capacity ÷ Charger Efficiency) × Rate

Full Charge Range (miles) = Battery Capacity (kWh) × EV Efficiency (mi/kWh)

Charger efficiency accounts for heat losses during AC-to-DC conversion in the onboard charger.

Assumptions & References

  • Dominion Energy Virginia standard residential rate ≈ $0.1317/kWh (2024 average; includes base charge amortized over typical usage of ~1,000 kWh/month). Source: Dominion Energy Virginia Schedule 1.
  • Appalachian Power (AEP Virginia) standard residential rate ≈ $0.1200/kWh (2024 average). Source: AEP Virginia Schedule R.
  • Dominion Energy Virginia off-peak EV rate ≈ $0.1100/kWh applies during off-peak hours (typically 9 PM–6 AM) under Schedule EV or similar time-of-use programs.
  • Level 2 charger efficiency is typically 85–95%; Level 1 (120V) is typically 80–85%.
  • Battery capacity entered should be the usable (not gross) capacity as rated by the manufacturer.
  • EV efficiency varies by driving conditions, temperature, speed, and HVAC use. EPA-rated efficiency is a useful starting point.
  • U.S. average monthly driving distance ≈ 1,183 miles (Federal Highway Administration, 2022).
  • Rates do not include applicable taxes, fees, or demand charges which may vary by locality.
  • This calculator estimates home charging only; public charging costs are not included.
