Fence Cost Estimator

Estimate the total cost of installing a fence based on perimeter, material type, height, and labor rates.

Formula

Material Cost = Length (lf) × Material Rate ($/lf) × Height Multiplier
Labor Cost = Length (lf) × Labor Rate ($/lf) × Height Multiplier
Gate Cost = Number of Gates × Per-Gate Cost
Removal Cost = Length (lf) × $4/lf (if applicable)
Subtotal = Material + Labor + Gates + Removal
Total = Subtotal × 1.10 (contingency) + Permit ($250)

Height Multipliers: 4 ft = 0.80×, 6 ft = 1.00× (baseline), 8 ft = 1.25×
Post Spacing: 1 post every 8 linear feet + 1 terminal post

Assumptions & References

  • Material rates are national averages (2024): Wood $12–$27/lf, Vinyl $20–$35/lf, Chain Link $7–$15/lf, Aluminum $20–$40/lf, Split Rail $9–$18/lf (HomeAdvisor / Angi).
  • Labor rates reflect typical contractor pricing; DIY installation can reduce labor cost by 50–70%.
  • Gate costs include hardware and installation: Chain Link ~$250, Wood ~$350, Vinyl ~$400, Aluminum ~$500, Split Rail ~$200.
  • Old fence removal estimated at $3–$5/lf; $4/lf used as midpoint.
  • Permit cost is a flat $250 estimate; actual permits vary by municipality ($0–$500+).
  • A 10% contingency is added for unexpected costs (terrain, soil conditions, corner posts).
  • Prices do not include taxes, HOA fees, or property survey costs.
  • Costs vary significantly by region, contractor, and material availability.
