Flooring Installation Cost Calculator
Estimate the total cost of flooring installation including materials, labor, underlayment, and waste allowance.
Formula
Base Area = Length × Width
Purchase Area = Base Area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Material Cost = Purchase Area × Material Cost per sq ft
Labor Cost = Base Area × Labor Cost per sq ft
Underlayment Cost = Base Area × Underlayment Cost per sq ft
Removal Cost = Base Area × Removal Cost per sq ft
Total Cost = Material Cost + Labor Cost + Underlayment Cost + Removal Cost
Cost per Sq Ft (installed) = Total Cost ÷ Base Area
Note: The waste factor is applied only to material purchases to account for cuts, offcuts, and pattern matching. Labor, underlayment, and removal are calculated on the actual room area.
Assumptions & References
- A 10% waste factor is the industry standard for most straight-lay installations; diagonal or herringbone patterns may require 15–20%.
- Typical material costs range from $1–$5/sq ft for laminate, $3–$8/sq ft for engineered hardwood, and $5–$15+/sq ft for solid hardwood or luxury vinyl plank (LVP).
- Labor costs typically range from $1.50–$4/sq ft depending on flooring type, subfloor condition, and region (HomeAdvisor, 2024).
- Underlayment is commonly required for laminate and floating floors, ranging from $0.25–$0.75/sq ft.
- Old flooring removal averages $1–$2/sq ft depending on material and adhesive type.
- This calculator does not account for furniture moving, subfloor repair, transitions, or trim/molding costs.
