Formulas Used
Net Room Area:
Anet = Length × Width
Total Material (with waste):
Atotal = Anet × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Boxes Required:
Boxes = ⌈ Atotal ÷ Coverage per Box ⌉ (ceiling — always round up)
Leftover Material:
Leftover = Boxes × Coverage per Box − Atotal
Estimated Cost:
Cost = Atotal × Cost per sq ft
Assumptions & References
- Room is assumed to be a simple rectangle. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles and sum the net areas before entering the total.
- A 5–10% waste factor is standard for straight-lay installations; 10–15% is recommended for diagonal or herringbone patterns due to additional cuts (NWFA / NAHB guidelines).
- Always purchase whole boxes — partial boxes are typically non-returnable once opened.
- Cost estimate covers material only; it excludes underlayment, adhesive, labour, trim, and disposal fees.
- Coverage per box is printed on the product packaging and varies by plank/tile size and thickness.
