Flooring Square Footage Calculator
Calculate the total flooring material needed for your room, including an adjustable waste factor for cuts and mistakes.
Formula
Base Area = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Total Flooring Needed = Base Area × (1 + Waste Factor / 100)
Square Yards = Total Flooring Needed ÷ 9
12×12 Tiles = ⌈Total Flooring Needed⌉ (rounded up to nearest whole tile)
Estimated Cost = Total Flooring Needed × Price per Square Foot
Assumptions & References
- Room is assumed to be a simple rectangle (Length × Width). For irregular rooms, calculate each rectangular section separately and sum the results.
- A waste factor of 10% is the industry standard for straight-lay flooring installations. Diagonal or herringbone patterns typically require 15–20%.
- 1 square yard = 9 square feet (standard US conversion).
- 12×12 inch tile count assumes one tile per square foot; always round up to avoid running short.
- Price estimate covers material only and does not include labor, underlayment, adhesive, or trim costs.
- Reference: National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) installation guidelines recommend a minimum 10% overage for solid and engineered hardwood.
