Garage Door Opener Horsepower Calculator
Estimate the minimum horsepower (HP) required for a garage door opener based on your door's weight, dimensions, and construction type.
Door Weight (lbs)
Typical single door: 80–150 lbs; double door: 150–350 lbs
Door Width (ft)
Door Height (ft)
Door Type
Standard Sectional (steel, uninsulated) Insulated Sectional (steel, insulated) Solid Wood / Carriage Style Heavy Wood or Custom Door Lightweight Aluminum / Glass Panel
Spring Assist
Yes – Torsion or Extension Springs (typical) No – No Spring Assist
Springs counterbalance most of the door weight; most residential doors have springs.
Opening Speed (ft/min)
Typical residential opener: 6–8 ft/min; commercial: up to 18 ft/min
Drive Efficiency (%)
Chain Drive (~85%) Belt Drive (~90%) Screw Drive (~80%) Direct Drive (~95%)
Calculate
function garCalc() { var resultDiv = document.getElementById('gar-result');
var weight = parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-weight').value); var width = parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-width').value); var height = parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-height').value); var typeFactor= parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-type').value); var springFactor = parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-spring').value); var speed = parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-speed').value); var efficiency= parseFloat(document.getElementById('gar-efficiency').value);
// --- Validation --- if (isNaN(weight) || weight 1000) { resultDiv.innerHTML = 'Please enter a door weight between 50 and 1000 lbs.'; return; } if (isNaN(width) || width 32) { resultDiv.innerHTML = 'Please enter a door width between 6 and 32 ft.'; return; } if (isNaN(height) || height 12) { resultDiv.innerHTML = 'Please enter a door height between 6 and 12 ft.'; return; } if (isNaN(speed) || speed 20) { resultDiv.innerHTML = 'Please enter an opening speed between 3 and 20 ft/min.'; return; }
// --- Core Formula --- // Effective load (lbs) = door weight × type factor × spring factor // Springs typically counterbalance ~50% of door weight (springFactor = 0.5 when present) var effectiveLoad = weight * typeFactor * springFactor;
// Work per cycle (ft·lbf) = effective load × door height (vertical travel) var workPerCycle = effectiveLoad * height;
// Power required (ft·lbf/min) = work per cycle × speed / height // Simplifies to: effectiveLoad × speed (since speed = height / time → time = height/speed) // Power (ft·lbf/min) = Force × velocity = effectiveLoad × speed var powerFtLbMin = effectiveLoad * speed;
// Convert to HP: 1 HP = 33,000 ft·lbf/min var hpRequired = powerFtLbMin / 33000;
// Adjust for drive efficiency var hpAdjusted = hpRequired / efficiency;
// Add 25% safety/service factor for motor sizing var hpRecommended = hpAdjusted * 1.25;
// --- Standard HP Tiers --- var standardHP, tier; if (hpRecommended ' + 'Door Area' + area + ' sq ft' + 'Effective Load (after spring & type factors)' + effectiveLoad.toFixed(1) + ' lbs' + 'Mechanical Power Required' + (powerFtLbMin).toFixed(0) + ' ft·lbf/min' + 'Raw HP Required' + hpRequired.toFixed(4) + ' HP' + 'HP After Drive Efficiency' + hpAdjusted.toFixed(4) + ' HP' + 'HP with 25% Service Factor' + hpRecommended.toFixed(4) + ' HP' + 'Recommended Standard Rating' + standardHP + '' + '' + 'Guidance: ' + tier + '
'; }
#### Formula
Step 1 – Effective Load: Effective Load (lbs) = Door Weight × Type Factor × Spring Factor
Step 2 – Mechanical Power: Power (ft·lbf/min) = Effective Load × Opening Speed (ft/min)
Step 3 – Convert to Horsepower: HPraw = Power ÷ 33,000 (1 HP = 33,000 ft·lbf/min)
Step 4 – Drive Efficiency Correction: HPadjusted = HPraw ÷ Drive Efficiency
Step 5 – Service Factor: HPrecommended = HPadjusted × 1.25
The result is then rounded up to the nearest standard commercial HP rating (1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1.5 HP).
