Grade Needed to Pass Calculator
Find out what grade you need on your remaining assessments or final exam to achieve your desired passing grade in a course.
Percentage of the total course grade already graded (e.g. 70 means 70% of the course is done).

Formula
The final course grade is a weighted average of completed and remaining work:
Final Grade = (W1 × G1) + (W2 × G2)
Solving for the required grade on remaining work (G2):
G2 = (Desired Grade − W1 × Current Grade) ÷ W2
- W1 = Weight of completed work (as a decimal, e.g. 0.70 for 70%)
- W2 = Weight of remaining work = 1 − W1
- G1 = Current grade on completed work (as a decimal)
- G2 = Required grade on remaining work (as a decimal)
Assumptions & References
- All grades and weights are expressed as percentages (0–100).
- The weight of completed work plus the weight of remaining work must equal 100%.
- The formula assumes a simple weighted average grading system (e.g. assignments = 40%, midterm = 30%, final = 30%).
- If the required grade exceeds 100%, the desired final grade is mathematically unachievable given the current standing.
- If the required grade is below 0%, the desired grade is already secured regardless of remaining performance.
- Extra credit, grade curves, or non-linear grading schemes are not accounted for.
