Home Square Footage Treatment Coverage Calculator

Determine how much treatment product (paint, sealant, pesticide, fertilizer, etc.) you need based on your home's square footage and the product's coverage rate.

Check your product label. Example: 1 gallon of paint covers ~400 sq ft.
Industry standard is 10–15% for waste and touch-ups.

Formula

Base Area = (Length × Width) + Additional Sq Ft
Total Area Needed = Base Area × Number of Coats
Raw Units = Total Area Needed ÷ Coverage Rate (sq ft per unit)
Units with Buffer = Raw Units × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Units to Purchase = ⌈ Units with Buffer ⌉  (ceiling / round up)

Assumptions & References

  • Coverage rate is taken directly from the product label (e.g., 1 gallon of interior paint covers ~350–400 sq ft per coat per the Paint Quality Institute).
  • A 10–15% waste/overage buffer is the industry-standard recommendation for paint, sealants, and similar treatments to account for spills, touch-ups, and surface irregularities.
  • Units are always rounded up (ceiling function) because partial units cannot typically be purchased.
  • For multi-story homes, calculate each floor separately and sum the results.
  • Pesticide and fertilizer coverage rates vary widely by product concentration; always consult the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and label.
  • This calculator does not account for doors, windows, or other non-treated surfaces. Subtract those areas from your total for more precise results.
  • Reference: EPA guidelines recommend following label directions exactly for pesticide application rates (EPA Pesticide Labels).
