Lawn Mowing Frequency Calculator

Determine how often you should mow your lawn based on grass type, current season, growth rate conditions, and the one-third rule of lawn care.

Fill in the fields above to see your recommended mowing schedule.

Formula

Step 1 — Adjusted Weekly Growth Rate:

Gadj = Gbase × Mrainfall × Mfertilizer

  • Gbase = Base growth rate (inches/week) by grass type & season (from turfgrass research)
  • Mrainfall = Rainfall modifier: 0.70 (<0.5"/wk), 0.90 (0.5–1.0"), 1.00 (1.0–1.5"), up to 1.40 (>1.5")
  • Mfertilizer = 1.25 if fertilized within 4 weeks, else 1.00

Step 2 — One-Third Rule (Maximum Height Before Mowing):

Hmax = Hdesired ÷ (1 − 1/3) = Hdesired × 1.5

Step 3 — Allowable Growth Per Mowing Cycle:

ΔH = Hmax − Hdesired = Hdesired × 0.5

Step 4 — Days Between Mowings:

Days = (ΔH ÷ Gadj) × 7

Assumptions & References

  • Base growth rates are derived from University Cooperative Extension turfgrass management guidelines (e.g., Purdue, NC State, Texas A&M AgriLife).
  • The One-Third Rule is the universally accepted standard in turfgrass science: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing to avoid stress, scalping, and root damage.
  • Rainfall modifier assumes 1.0–1.5 inches/week is optimal for most cool- and warm-season grasses; values outside this range adjust growth proportionally.
  • Fertilizer modifier of 1.25× reflects typical nitrogen-induced growth acceleration observed within 4 weeks of application.
  • Dormancy thresholds: Zoysia and Centipede are treated as fully dormant in winter; other warm-season grasses have minimal winter growth.
  • Growth rates assume average temperatures for each season; extreme heat or cold will further reduce growth beyond what this calculator models.
  • This calculator does not account for shade, soil compaction, pest/disease pressure, or slope — all of which can affect growth rate.
