MassSave Rebate Estimator — Projected Incentives for HVAC Upgrades

Estimate your projected MassSave rebates for qualifying HVAC equipment upgrades in Massachusetts. Rebate amounts are based on equipment type, efficiency ratings, and home characteristics per the 2024–2025 MassSave residential incentive schedule.

1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hr. Typical home: 2–5 tons.
Each indoor head counts as one zone.
Minimum qualifying SEER2: 16 for heat pumps, 16 for central AC.
Minimum qualifying HSPF2: 7.5 for ducted, 8.1 for ductless.
Minimum qualifying COP: 3.1 (ENERGY STAR).
Minimum qualifying AFUE: 90% for gas, 87% for oil.
Minimum qualifying UEF: 2.0 (ENERGY STAR).
Total heated/cooled living area.
Income-qualified customers may receive higher rebates.
Replacing oil/propane may qualify for additional electrification bonuses.

Formula

Step 1 — Base Rebate by Equipment Type:

  • Ducted ASHP: $250 × max(tons, 2)
  • Ductless ASHP: $250 + $150 × (zones − 1)
  • GSHP: $600 × tons
  • Central AC: $150 × tons
  • Gas Boiler: $1,500 + $0.10 × sqft
  • Gas Furnace: $200 + $0.05 × sqft
  • Oil Boiler: $600 + $0.15 × sqft
  • Oil Furnace: $400 + $0.10 × sqft
  • HPWH: $750 (flat)

Step 2 — Efficiency Tier Bonus: Bonus = Base × efficiency_bonus_rate
Rates: +5% per SEER2 point above 18; +5% per 0.5 HSPF2 above minimum; +10% per COP point above 3.1; +1% per AFUE point above minimum. Capped at 30%.

Step 3 — Electrification Bonus (oil→electric): min($500 × tons, $2,000) for heat pumps; $250 for HPWH.

Step 4 — Income Multiplier: Subtotal × income_multiplier (1.0× market, 1.25× moderate ≤80% AMI, 1.50× low ≤60% AMI).

Step 5 — Program Cap: Final Rebate = min(Subtotal × income_multiplier, program_cap)

Federal 25C Tax Credit: min(estimated_equipment_cost × 30%, category_cap) Caps: Heat pumps $2,000; Boilers/furnaces/AC/HPWH $600.

Assumptions & References

  • Rebate amounts based on the MassSave 2024–2025 Residential Rebate Schedule for Massachusetts electric and gas utilities.
  • Minimum qualifying efficiencies: ASHP ducted SEER2 ≥16 / HSPF2 ≥7.5; ductless SEER2 ≥16 / HSPF2 ≥8.1; GSHP COP ≥3.1; gas boiler/furnace AFUE ≥90%; oil boiler AFUE ≥87%; oil furnace AFUE ≥87%; HPWH UEF ≥2.0.
  • Income qualification thresholds follow HUD Area Median Income (AMI) guidelines for Massachusetts. Customers must apply through their utility for income-qualified status.
  • Electrification bonus applies when replacing an oil, propane, or kerosene heating system with a qualifying electric heat pump or HPWH.
  • Federal IRA Section 25C tax credit (Inflation Reduction Act 2022): 30% of qualified equipment costs, annual caps of $2,000 for heat pumps and $600 for other HVAC/water heating equipment. Consult a tax professional.
  • Installed cost estimates are approximations for 25C credit calculation only; actual costs vary by contractor and region.
  • Results are estimates only. Actual rebates depend on contractor enrollment, equipment certification (AHRI, ENERGY STAR), utility territory, and available program funding. Verify current amounts at masssave.com.
  • MassSave program is administered by Massachusetts electric and gas utilities including Eversource, National Grid, Unitil, and Cape Light Compact.
