Nursery Container Sizing Calculator
Determine the recommended container size (in gallons) for nursery plants based on root ball dimensions and plant spread. Uses industry-standard nursery trade container sizing guidelines.

1. Root Ball Volume (cylinder):
Vrootball = π × (drb / 2)² × hrb
2. Volume-based container requirement (15% buffer):
Vvol = Vrootball × 1.15
3. Spread-based minimum container diameter (ANSI Z60.1):
Dmin = Plant Spread / 3
4. Depth-based minimum container depth:
Depthmin = hrb + 1 inch
5. Volume from spread/depth constraint:
Vspread = π × (Dmin / 2)² × Depthmin
6. Required container volume:
Vrequired = max(Vvol, Vspread)
7. Standard size selection:
Smallest standard nursery trade container size ≥ Vrequired

Assumptions & References
- Root ball is approximated as a cylinder (conservative; actual root balls may be slightly smaller).
- A 15% volume buffer is added above root ball volume to allow for soil, drainage, and root expansion — consistent with nursery industry practice.
- Minimum container diameter = plant spread ÷ 3, per ANSI Z60.1 (American Standard for Nursery Stock).
- Minimum container depth = root ball height + 1 inch for drainage allowance.
- Standard nursery trade container sizes follow the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA) / AmericanHort trade size designations (#1 through #300).
- Suggested container dimensions are back-calculated using a typical nursery pot height-to-diameter ratio of 0.9.
