Pathfinder Encounter CR Calculator

Calculate the effective Challenge Rating (CR) of a Pathfinder 1e encounter and determine its difficulty for your party.

Fill in the fields above and click Calculate.

Formula

Step 1 – Adjusted Party Level (APL):
APL = Average Party Level
If party size ≥ 6: APL += 1
If party size ≤ 2: APL -= 1

Step 2 – Total Encounter XP:
Total XP = Σ (Number of Monsteri × XP(CRi))
where XP(CR) is the standard Pathfinder XP value for that CR (e.g., CR 5 = 1,600 XP).

Step 3 – Encounter CR:
Encounter CR = CR whose XP value is closest to Total Encounter XP
(e.g., 3,200 XP ≈ CR 7)

Step 4 – Difficulty:
Compare Total XP to the XP thresholds for the APL from Pathfinder Table 12-2:
Easy (APL−1), Average (APL), Challenging (APL+1), Hard (APL+2), Epic (APL+3+)

Step 5 – XP per PC:
XP per PC = Total Encounter XP ÷ Party Size

Assumptions & References

  • Based on Pathfinder 1st Edition Core Rulebook, Chapter 12: GameMastering, Table 12-2 (Encounter Design) and Table 12-3 (Experience Point Awards).
  • CR fractions supported: 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and integers 1–30.
  • APL adjustment: +1 for 6+ PCs, −1 for 1–2 PCs, per the standard Pathfinder encounter-building rules.
  • Encounter CR is determined by matching total XP to the nearest standard CR XP value, consistent with the Pathfinder method of adding monsters by XP budget.
  • XP per PC uses the full encounter XP divided equally among all party members (before any individual adjustments for level differences).
  • This calculator does not account for terrain, action economy, or special abilities that may significantly alter effective difficulty.
  • For mixed-CR groups, each monster type is entered separately; up to two monster types are supported in this calculator.
