Paver and Stone Quantity Calculator
Calculate the number of pavers or stones needed to cover an area, including a customizable waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
Fill in the fields above and click Calculate.
Formulas Used
Total Area:
Total Area (sq ft) = Area Length (ft) × Area Width (ft)
Effective Paver Area (including joint):
Effective Length (ft) = (Paver Length (in) + Joint Size (in)) ÷ 12
Effective Width (ft) = (Paver Width (in) + Joint Size (in)) ÷ 12
Area per Paver (sq ft) = Effective Length × Effective Width
Base Pavers:
Base Pavers = Total Area ÷ Area per Paver
Total Pavers with Waste:
Total Pavers = ⌈ Base Pavers × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100) ⌉
Bedding Sand Volume (1 in standard depth):
Sand (cu ft) = Total Area (sq ft) × (1 ÷ 12)
Sand (cu yd) = Sand (cu ft) ÷ 27
Assumptions & References
- The project area is rectangular. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and sum the results.
- Joint / gap size is uniform on all sides of each paver.
- A 10% waste allowance is the industry standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or herringbone patterns typically require 15–20%.
- Bedding sand depth of 1 inch is the standard recommendation per ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) guidelines.
- Results are rounded up to the nearest whole paver to ensure full coverage.
- This calculator does not account for base gravel / sub-base material — consult a contractor for full material estimates.
