Calculate the square footage of the deck area surrounding your pool. Supports rectangular and oval/elliptical pool shapes.
Formula
Rectangular Pool:
- Pool Area = L × W
- Outer Area = (L + 2d) × (W + 2d)
- Deck Area = Outer Area − Pool Area
Oval / Elliptical Pool:
- Pool Area = π × a × b (a = half-length, b = half-width)
- Outer Area = π × (a + d) × (b + d)
- Deck Area = Outer Area − Pool Area
Where d = deck width around the pool (ft).
A 10% waste factor is added to the recommended order quantity to account for cuts, waste, and irregular edges.
Assumptions & References
- The deck is assumed to be a uniform width on all sides of the pool.
- For oval pools, the outer boundary is modeled as a concentric ellipse with each semi-axis increased by the deck width — a standard approximation used in the industry.
- Pool area is subtracted from the total outer area to give only the deck surface.
- A 10% waste factor is a common contractor recommendation for pavers, concrete, or tile installations (NAHB guidelines).
- All measurements are in feet; results are in square feet.
