#### Formulas Used
Pitch Factor: PF = √(rise² + 12²) / 12 where rise is the vertical rise in inches per 12 inches of horizontal run.
Sloped Surface Area: Asloped = Length × Width × PF
Effective Drainage Area (Horizontal Projection): Aeff = Length × Width Per SMACNA and IPC standards, the horizontal projection of the roof is used for drainage design, not the sloped area.
Peak Flow Rate — Rational Method (optional): Q = C × i × A where Q = peak flow (cfs), C = runoff coefficient (dimensionless), i = rainfall intensity (in/hr), A = drainage area (acres).
Unit Conversions: 1 acre = 43,560 ft² | 1 cfs = 448.831 GPM
#### Assumptions & References
- The horizontal projection (plan area) is the standard effective drainage area for gutter and downspout sizing per SMACNA and IPC Section 1106.
- The Rational Method (Q = CiA) is valid for drainage areas up to ~200 acres and assumes uniform rainfall over the entire area.
- Typical runoff coefficients for roofs: 0.75–0.95 (smooth metal/tile ≈ 0.95; asphalt shingles ≈ 0.85–0.90).
- Gutter sizing guidance is approximate, based on SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual Table 1 and IPC Table 1106.2 at a 1/16 in/ft slope.
