Roof Patch Material Coverage Calculator
Calculate the total roofing patch material needed for your repair project, accounting for overlap and waste.
Formulas Used
1. Patch Dimensions
Patch Length = Damaged Length + 2 × Overlap
Patch Width = Damaged Width + 2 × Overlap
Overlap is added to both sides (left/right and top/bottom) to ensure a watertight seal.
2. Net Patch Area
Net Area (sq ft) = Patch Length × Patch Width
3. Total Material Area (with Waste)
Total Area = Net Area × (1 + Waste Factor / 100)
4. Rolls / Sheets Required
Roll Area = Roll Width × Roll Length
Rolls Needed = ⌈ Total Area ÷ Roll Area ⌉ (ceiling — always round up)
5. Roofing Squares
Squares = Total Area ÷ 100 (1 roofing square = 100 sq ft)
Assumptions & References
- Overlap is applied equally to all four sides of the damaged area. Industry standard for self-adhesive patch membranes is a minimum 6-inch (6″) overlap on each side (NRCA Roofing Manual).
- A waste factor of 10% is the typical default for small patch repairs; increase to 15–20% for complex shapes or steep pitches.
- Default roll dimensions (3 ft × 33.5 ft = 100.5 sq ft) match common self-adhesive modified bitumen rolls available at home improvement stores.
- 1 roofing square = 100 sq ft (standard US roofing industry unit — NRCA).
- This calculator assumes a flat or low-slope patch area. For steep-slope roofs, measure along the actual roof surface, not the horizontal projection.
- Material costs are not included; consult your supplier for pricing per roll or per square.
- Always follow the patch product manufacturer's installation instructions for overlap and adhesion requirements.
