Student-to-Faculty Ratio Analyzer
Calculate your institution's student-to-faculty ratio and see how it compares to national benchmarks for different institution types.
Formulas Used
FTE Faculty = Full-Time Faculty + (Part-Time Faculty × Part-Time Weight)
Student-to-Faculty Ratio = Total Enrolled Students ÷ FTE Faculty
Difference vs. Benchmark = Calculated Ratio − Benchmark Ratio
% Difference = ((Calculated Ratio − Benchmark Ratio) ÷ Benchmark Ratio) × 100
Recommended FTE Faculty = Total Students ÷ Benchmark Ratio
A lower ratio generally indicates more individualized attention per student.
Assumptions & References
- Part-time faculty are converted to FTE using a configurable weight (default 0.5, per IPEDS methodology).
- Benchmark ratios are derived from NCES / IPEDS 2022–2023 national averages by institution type.
- Research University benchmark: 15:1 (e.g., large public universities).
- Liberal Arts College benchmark: 11:1 (e.g., small private colleges).
- Community College benchmark: 20:1 (AACC 2023 data).
- Vocational / Technical School benchmark: 18:1.
- Private K–12 benchmark: 9:1 (NAIS 2023).
- Public K–12 benchmark: 16:1 (NCES Digest of Education Statistics 2023).
- This tool uses headcount enrollment; some institutions use FTE enrollment instead.
- Ratio alone does not capture class size distribution, research vs. teaching loads, or adjunct usage.
