Term vs Whole Life Insurance Cost Comparator
Compare the true long-term cost of term life insurance versus whole life insurance, factoring in premium differences, investment opportunity cost, and cash value accumulation.
Formulas Used
Future Value of Investment Portfolio (Term Strategy):
During term period (years 1–T): FV₁ = (P_whole − P_term) × [((1 + r_inv)ᵀ − 1) / r_inv]
After term expires (years T+1–N): FV₂ = FV₁ × (1 + r_inv)^(N−T) + P_whole × [((1 + r_inv)^(N−T) − 1) / r_inv]
Whole Life Cash Value:
CV(N) = P_whole × L × [((1 + r_cv)ᴺ − 1) / r_cv]
Where L = 0.70 (blended load factor accounting for insurer expenses and mortality charges)
Net Cost: Net Cost = Total Premiums Paid − Asset Value at Year N
Effective Return on Whole Life: r_eff = (CV / Total Premiums)^(1/N) − 1
Where: P_whole = whole life annual premium, P_term = term annual premium, r_inv = investment return rate, r_cv = cash value growth rate, N = analysis years, T = term length
Assumptions & References
- The "Buy Term, Invest the Difference" strategy assumes the annual premium difference is invested consistently at the stated return rate.
- After the term policy expires, the freed-up whole life premium equivalent is also invested (self-insurance phase).
- Cash value growth uses a 0.70 blended load factor to approximate insurer expense loads, mortality charges, and commission costs typical in the first 10–20 policy years (NAIC, 2023).
- Whole life cash value growth rate of 3–4% reflects typical participating policy dividend crediting rates (LIMRA, 2023).
- Investment return of 7% approximates long-run U.S. equity market real returns (Damodaran, NYU Stern, 2023).
- Tax treatment is not modeled. Whole life cash value grows tax-deferred; investment gains may be subject to capital gains tax.
- No policy loans, surrenders, or lapses are modeled.
- Term premiums are assumed level for the full term period; whole life premiums are assumed level for life.
- Death benefit for whole life remains constant at the face amount regardless of cash value (unless a paid-up additions rider is present).
