Tile Cost Estimator
Calculate the total cost of tiling a floor or wall, including material waste, grout, adhesive, and labor.
Formulas Used
Room Area (ft²) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Tile Area (ft²) = [Tile Length (in) ÷ 12] × [Tile Width (in) ÷ 12]
Tiles Needed (base) = Room Area ÷ Tile Area
Tiles Needed (with waste) = ⌈ Tiles Needed (base) × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100) ⌉
Tile Material Cost ($) = Tiles Needed (with waste) × Tile Area × Price per sq ft
Grout / Adhesive / Labor Cost ($) = Room Area × respective rate per sq ft
Total Cost ($) = Tile Cost + Grout Cost + Adhesive Cost + Labor Cost
Assumptions & References
- A 10% waste factor is the industry standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or complex patterns typically require 15–20%.
- Tile prices are entered as cost per square foot of finished tile (as sold at retail).
- Grout and adhesive/mortar costs are applied to the net room area (not the waste-adjusted area), as these materials cover the actual floor surface.
- Labor rates vary widely by region; the U.S. national average is roughly $4–$14 per sq ft (HomeAdvisor, 2024).
- This estimate does not include subfloor preparation, backer board, trim pieces, or removal of existing flooring.
- Tile sizes are entered in inches and converted to feet for area calculations.
- All costs are in USD; adjust pricing inputs for other currencies.
