Tile Flooring Material Calculator
Calculate the number of tiles, grout, and adhesive needed for your flooring project, including waste allowance.
Formulas Used
Room Area: A = Length × Width (sq ft)
Effective Tile Area (with grout):
Atile = ((Tile Length + Grout Joint) / 12) × ((Tile Width + Grout Joint) / 12) (sq ft)
Base Tiles: N = A / Atile
Tiles with Waste: Ntotal = ⌈N × (1 + Waste% / 100)⌉
Grout (lbs):
Grout = ((L + W) / (L × W)) × J × D × 0.09375 × Ain² × (1 + Waste%/100)
where L = tile length (in), W = tile width (in), J = joint width (in), D = tile depth (0.375 in assumed), Ain² = room area in sq in
Thinset Bags: ⌈ A × (1 + Waste%/100) / 45 ⌉ (50 lb bags, ~45 sq ft coverage each)
Assumptions & References
- Default waste factor of 10% is recommended for straight-lay patterns; use 15–20% for diagonal or complex patterns.
- Tile thickness is assumed to be 3/8 in (9.5 mm) — standard ceramic/porcelain tile — for grout volume calculation.
- Thinset adhesive coverage is assumed at 45 sq ft per 50 lb bag (TCNA Handbook standard coverage rate).
- Grout formula based on the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) standard grout coverage formula.
- Room dimensions should be the net floor area; subtract any permanent fixtures (cabinets, islands) for accuracy.
- Grout joint width of 1/8 in (0.125 in) is typical for rectified tiles; 3/16 in for standard tiles.
- Price and box calculations are optional and for budgeting purposes only; actual prices vary by supplier.
