Tile Square Footage Calculator

Calculate the number of tiles needed for any room or surface, including a customizable waste factor for cuts and breakage.

Fill in the fields above and click Calculate.

Formulas Used

1. Room Area (sq ft)
Room Area = Room Length (ft) × Room Width (ft)

2. Effective Tile Layout Area (sq ft)
Effective Tile Area = ((Tile Length + Grout Joint) / 12) × ((Tile Width + Grout Joint) / 12)
Grout joint is added to each tile dimension to account for spacing between tiles.

3. Tiles Needed Without Waste
Tiles (no waste) = Room Area / Effective Tile Area

4. Tiles Needed With Waste
Tiles (with waste) = Tiles (no waste) × (1 + Waste% / 100)
Final count is always rounded up to the nearest whole tile.

5. Total Tile Area Purchased (sq ft)
Total Area = Tiles Needed × (Tile Length / 12) × (Tile Width / 12)

Assumptions & References

  • Room dimensions are entered in feet; tile dimensions in inches.
  • A 10% waste factor is the industry standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or herringbone layouts typically require 15–20%.
  • The default grout joint of 1/8 inch (0.125 in) is common for rectified tiles; larger tiles often use 3/16 in or wider joints.
  • Box coverage of 20 sq ft is used as a reference estimate only — verify the actual coverage on your tile packaging.
  • This calculator assumes a rectangular area. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and sum the results.
