Tree Pruning Season Timing Calculator
Determine the optimal pruning window for your trees based on species type, USDA hardiness zone, and local climate conditions.
Formula
Pruning Score = BaseScore × DiseaseFactor
- BaseScore: 3 = Optimal month for species/goal, 2 = Acceptable month, 1 = Avoid month
- DiseaseFactor: Low pressure = 1.00, Moderate = 0.95, High = 0.85 (applied when pruning in non-optimal windows)
- Score ≥ 2.5 → Optimal | 1.5–2.49 → Acceptable | < 1.5 → Not Recommended
- Safety and dead-wood removal override timing — always scored 3.0 (proceed any time)
- Optimal month windows are shifted earlier by 1–2 months for warmer zones (8–11) due to earlier dormancy break
Assumptions & References
- Dormancy windows are based on USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (zones 3–11) and average last/first frost dates
- Spring-blooming deciduous trees set flower buds on prior-year wood (floricane); summer bloomers on current-year wood (primocane) — ISA Best Management Practices for Pruning, 2008
- Fruit tree dormant pruning recommendations follow University of California Cooperative Extension guidelines for stone and pome fruits
- Disease pressure adjustments reflect guidance from the American Phytopathological Society on wound-infection risk during wet/humid periods
- Conifer candle-pruning timing follows Purdue Extension and USDA Forest Service recommendations
- Tool sterilization protocols: 10% bleach (sodium hypochlorite) or 70% isopropyl alcohol per ISA standards
- Calculator assumes Northern Hemisphere seasons; Southern Hemisphere users should offset by 6 months
- Microclimatic factors (elevation, urban heat island, proximity to water) may shift optimal windows by 2–4 weeks
