Carpet Area Measurement Calculator

Calculate the total carpet area needed for your room, accounting for waste from cuts and pattern matching.

Formulas Used

Net Room Area (sq ft) = Room Length × Room Width

Gross Area (sq ft) = Net Area × (1 + Waste Factor / 100)

Carpet Strips Needed = ⌈ Room Width ÷ Carpet Roll Width ⌉

Linear Feet of Roll = Strips Needed × Room Length × (1 + Waste Factor / 100)

Total Carpet to Purchase (sq ft) = Carpet Roll Width × Linear Feet

Area in Square Yards = Area in sq ft ÷ 9

Estimated Cost ($) = Total Purchased Area (sq yd) × Price per sq yd

Assumptions & References

  • Room is assumed to be a simple rectangle. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles and sum the results.
  • A standard waste factor of 10% is pre-filled; increase to 15–20% for rooms with many cuts, diagonal layouts, or large pattern repeats.
  • Standard carpet roll widths are 12 ft or 15 ft in North America; 4 m (~13.1 ft) is common in Europe.
  • 1 square yard = 9 square feet (carpet is traditionally sold by the square yard in the US).
  • The number of strips is rounded up (ceiling function) to ensure full coverage across the room width.
  • Price input is optional; leave blank to skip cost estimation.
  • Reference: Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) — Installation Standard CRI 104 recommends a minimum 10% overage for residential installations.
