GFCI Outlets Required per Room:

GFCI_outlets = outlets_per_room × (1 if room is GFCI-required else 0)

Total GFCI Outlets:

Total_GFCI = Σ GFCI_outlets for all selected rooms

AFCI Breakers Required:

Total_AFCI = count of selected rooms where AFCI is required (1 breaker per room circuit)

Estimated Material Cost:

Cost_Low  = (Total_GFCI × $15) + (Total_AFCI × $35)
Cost_High = (Total_GFCI × $25) + (Total_AFCI × $55)

Assumptions & References

  • NEC 210.8 — GFCI protection requirements for dwelling units (kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors, basements, crawl spaces, laundry areas, boathouses).
  • NEC 210.12 — AFCI protection requirements; expanded in NEC 2020 and 2023 to cover virtually all 120V, 15/20A branch circuits in dwelling units.
  • NEC 680.22 — GFCI required for all receptacles within 20 ft of pool, spa, or hot tub water edge.
  • NEC 553.4 — GFCI required for all receptacles in boathouses.
  • One AFCI breaker is assumed per room type (single circuit); multi-circuit rooms may require additional breakers.
  • GFCI outlet count is based on user-entered average outlets per room; actual count may vary.
  • Dual-function AFCI/GFCI breakers can satisfy both requirements simultaneously where both apply.
  • Cost estimates are for materials only; labor costs vary by region ($50–$100/hr electrician rate).
