Flooring Material and Cost Calculator
Calculate the total flooring material required and estimated cost for your room, accounting for waste and overlap.
Formulas Used
Net Area per Room (sq ft) = Length × Width
Total Net Area (sq ft) = Net Area per Room × Number of Rooms
Total Material to Purchase (sq ft) = Total Net Area × (1 + Waste Factor / 100)
Material Cost ($) = Total Material to Purchase × Price per sq ft
Installation Cost ($) = Total Net Area × Installation Cost per sq ft
Total Project Cost ($) = Material Cost + Installation Cost
Assumptions & References
- Room shape is assumed to be a perfect rectangle (Length × Width).
- A waste factor of 10% is the industry standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or herringbone patterns typically require 15–20%.
- Material is purchased based on gross area (including waste), while installation labour is charged on net area.
- Prices do not include underlayment, adhesive, trim, or transition strips unless factored into the per-sq-ft price.
- Waste factor range capped at 50% to prevent unrealistic inputs.
