Hurricane Roof Damage Repair Cost Estimator
Estimate the total cost to repair a hurricane-damaged roof based on roof area, damage severity, roofing material, and your region's labor cost index.
Formula
Step 1 — Damaged Area:
Damaged Area (sq ft) = Roof Area × (Damage % ÷ 100)
Step 2 — Base Repair Cost:
Base Cost = Damaged Area × Material Cost ($/sq ft) × Pitch Factor × Regional Labor Index
Step 3 — Debris Removal & Tarping (if selected):
Debris Cost = (Roof Area × $1.00 × Regional Index) + $350 mobilization fee
Step 4 — Decking Replacement (if selected):
Decking Cost = Decking Area × $2.50/sq ft × Regional Index
(Partial = 25% of damaged area; Full = 100% of damaged area)
Step 5 — Subtotal:
Subtotal = Base Cost + Debris Cost + Decking Cost
Step 6 — Overhead & Profit:
Overhead = Subtotal × 17.5%
Step 7 — Post-Hurricane Surge Premium:
Surge = (Subtotal + Overhead) × 15%
Step 8 — Total:
Total = Subtotal + Overhead + Surge
Material Cost Benchmarks (national avg, installed):
Asphalt Shingles: $4.50/sq ft | Metal: $9.00/sq ft | Clay/Concrete Tile: $11.00/sq ft |
Wood Shake: $7.50/sq ft | Flat/TPO/EPDM: $6.00/sq ft
Pitch Factors: Low (≤4/12): 1.00 | Medium (5–8/12): 1.15 | Steep (≥9/12): 1.30
Assumptions & References
- Material costs are national averages per RSMeans 2024 and HomeAdvisor/Angi cost data; actual costs vary by supplier and local market.
- A 17.5% overhead and profit margin is applied per standard contractor industry practice (NAHB guidelines).
- A 15% post-hurricane surge premium reflects documented price increases following major storm events (FEMA PA cost studies; Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety — IBHS).
- Pitch factors are derived from NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) labor adjustment tables.
- Regional labor index values are based on Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) regional construction wage data and RSMeans city cost indexes.
- Debris removal estimate of $1.00/sq ft + $350 mobilization is consistent with post-hurricane cleanup contractor quotes (FEMA PA Unit Cost Guide).
- OSB sheathing replacement cost of $2.50/sq ft installed is per RSMeans 2024 light framing data.
- This tool provides estimates only. Obtain licensed contractor inspections and quotes before making repair decisions.
- Does not include structural framing repairs, interior water damage, permits, or insurance deductibles.
