Junk Hauling Weight Estimator
Estimate the total weight of your junk haul by selecting item categories and quantities. Useful for pricing jobs, selecting the right truck, and calculating disposal fees.
Formula
Total Weight (lbs) = Σ (Quantityi × Average Unit Weighti) + Custom Weight
Where average unit weights are:
- Furniture: 150 lbs/piece
- Large Appliances: 150 lbs/unit
- Mattresses: 75 lbs/unit
- Electronics: 30 lbs/unit
- Boxes / Bags (misc): 30 lbs/unit
- Yard Waste Bags: 25 lbs/bag
- Construction Debris Bags/Buckets: 50 lbs/unit
- Tires (passenger): 25 lbs/tire
Short Tons = Total lbs ÷ 2,000
Truck Loads = Total lbs ÷ 3,000 (standard junk truck usable capacity)
Disposal Cost Estimate = Short Tons × $100/ton (midpoint of $75–$150/ton range)
Assumptions & References
- Furniture average weight of 150 lbs is based on ISRI (Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries) bulk estimates and common hauler data for mixed residential furniture.
- Large appliance average of 150 lbs sourced from manufacturer spec sheets: refrigerators ~200 lbs, washers/dryers ~130–170 lbs, stoves ~130 lbs.
- Mattress weights per Sleep Foundation and manufacturer data: twin ~45 lbs, full ~60 lbs, queen ~90 lbs, king ~130 lbs — averaged to 75 lbs.
- Electronics weights based on EPA e-Stewards and manufacturer data: CRT TVs ~50 lbs, flat-panel TVs ~25 lbs, desktop computers ~20 lbs — averaged to 30 lbs.
- Miscellaneous boxes/bags estimated at 30 lbs based on standard 1.5 cubic foot box filled with household items at ~20 lbs/cu ft density.
- Yard waste bags (30-gallon) estimated at 25 lbs based on USDA composting guidelines for mixed green/brown yard debris.
- Construction debris bags/buckets estimated at 50 lbs; concrete and drywall density ~100–150 lbs/cu ft, typical 5-gallon bucket ~50 lbs.
- Passenger tire weight of 25 lbs per Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) average for standard P-metric tires.
- Truck capacity of 3,000 lbs is a conservative usable payload for a standard 1-ton junk hauling truck (gross payload ~2,000–4,000 lbs depending on vehicle).
- Landfill tipping fees of $75–$150 per ton reflect national averages per the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) 2023 Solid Waste Report; local fees vary significantly.
- All weights are averages — actual weights may vary by brand, size, and fill level. For precise pricing, weigh loads at a certified scale.
