Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?

Standard 2-cubic-foot bags: 13.5 bags per cubic yard. For small jobs (under 2–3 yards), bagged mulch may be more practical, but bulk delivery is significantly cheaper per yard for larger projects.

Should I remove old mulch before adding new?

Not usually. If the existing mulch layer is under 3 inches, simply add new mulch on top. If the old layer is thick, compacted, or moldy, rake it to break it up before adding fresh material. Only remove old mulch if it has fungal issues or has built up beyond 4–5 inches total.

Does mulch attract termites?

Mulch does not attract termites, but it creates moisture conditions they favor. Keep mulch at least 6 inches away from foundation walls and siding. Cedar and cypress mulches are naturally more resistant to insects than hardwood or pine.
