Formulas Used
Term GPA:
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours)
Cumulative GPA:
Cumulative GPA = (Previous Quality Points + Term Quality Points) / (Previous Credits + Term Credits)
where Quality Points = GPA Points × Credit Hours
Credits Needed to Reach Target GPA (at 4.0 pace):
Future Credits = (Target GPA × Current Total Credits − Current Quality Points) / (4.0 − Target GPA)
Required Next-Term GPA:
Required GPA = (Target GPA × (Total Credits + Next Term Credits) − Total Quality Points) / Next Term Credits
Percentage Equivalent:
Score % = (GPA / 4.0) × 100
Assumptions & References
- Uses the standard 4.0 GPA scale as defined by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO).
- Grade point values: A=4.0, A−=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B−=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C−=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0.
- Credit hours range from 0.5 to 6 per subject; typical courses are 3–4 credit hours.
- Dean's List threshold set at ≥3.5 GPA; Academic Probation risk below 2.0 GPA (common institutional standard).
- The "credits needed" calculation assumes all future coursework earns a 4.0 (straight A's), representing the minimum possible credits required.
- Pass/Fail, Incomplete, or Withdrawal grades are not included in this calculator.
