Assumptions & References

  • Room dimensions are rectangular. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles and sum the areas.
  • Grout joint width is added to each tile dimension to compute the effective tile footprint on the floor.
  • Pattern multipliers follow industry standards: straight/grid = 0% extra, diagonal/45° = 10%, herringbone = 15%, brick/offset = 10% (TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation).
  • A minimum 10% waste factor is recommended by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) for straight layouts; 15–20% for diagonal or complex patterns.
  • Always round up (ceiling function) to avoid running short of tiles mid-project.
  • Deduction area accounts for fixed obstacles (kitchen islands, cabinets, fireplaces) that will not be tiled.
  • Coverage per box is calculated using the effective tile face area (including grout joint), matching how manufacturers typically report box coverage.
