Appliance Energy Star Savings Calculator
Estimate your annual energy and cost savings by replacing an old appliance with an Energy Star certified model.
Formulas Used
Annual Energy Saved (kWh/yr)
= Old Appliance kWh/yr − Energy Star kWh/yr
Annual Cost Saved ($/yr)
= Annual Energy Saved × Electricity Rate ($/kWh)
Lifetime Cost Saved ($)
= Annual Cost Saved × Years of Use
Lifetime CO₂ Reduction (lbs)
= Annual Energy Saved × Years of Use × CO₂ Emission Factor (lbs/kWh)
Energy Reduction (%)
= (Annual Energy Saved ÷ Old Appliance kWh/yr) × 100
Assumptions & References
- Default energy use values are based on EPA Energy Star program typical usage data.
- The US average electricity rate is approximately $0.13/kWh (EIA, 2024); enter your local rate for accuracy.
- The US average CO₂ emission factor is approximately 0.92 lbs CO₂/kWh (EPA eGRID 2022).
- Energy Star refrigerators use ~9% less energy than federal minimum standards; washers ~25% less; dishwashers ~12% less.
- Calculation assumes constant electricity rate and usage over the appliance lifetime.
- Does not account for rebates, purchase price differences, or time-value of money (no discounting).
- CO₂ conversion: 1 metric ton = 2,204.62 lbs.
